Writing for IMA

IMA membership offers the opportunity to write and submit a manuscript for possible publication in IMA's monthly journal, Management Accounting. Articles can be written on any accounting related topic.

IMA divides manuscripts into two broad categories, accounting practice and general manuscripts. An accounting practice manuscript is one that is professionally oriented in the direction of "how we do it," such as a case study, description of a current or past technique, or actual experience with a system or procedure. All others are considered general manuscripts.

Writing is a stimulating and rewarding experience, but it is also a lot of work. These are the principal rewards to justify the effort:

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE. Almost everyone in the accounting profession can make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge. It may be a new technique you are using in your work, a fresh viewpoint on an old subject, or simply some thoughts on work that others are doing.

DEEPEN YOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE ON A SUBJECT. The discipline of writing is one of the best ways to test a new idea. If it looks good after you have put it down on paper, you may really have something. If you see that you have to search out a few facts, or even revise your conclusions in light of what is staring back at you from the typewritten paper, that is also a big step forward. When your work has convinced you that it was written by an "expert," you will know it was worth the time it took.

GAIN LOCAL RECOGNITION. All Chapter members whose manuscripts are submitted for publication are recognized in our newsletter. Also, authors and their manuscripts are listed in the annual Program and Roster booklet.

GAIN NATIONAL RECOGNITION. The greatest incentive which IMA has to offer its potential authors is the chance of publication in Management Accounting, which reaches 90,000 professionals each month.

The three highest-rated manuscripts each year are awarded Lybrand Medals: gold, silver, and bronze. The next twenty-five are recognized with Certificates of Merit. Non-members may have articles published in Management Accounting, but awards are given only to IMA members. To be eligible for awards, manuscripts must be sent to IMA National by November 19, 1999.

If you have ideas for a manuscript, contact the Vice President of Education, Chris Albert, 815.397.7070 Ext. 2322.
